Yonex Astrox 88D Pro Review

The Yonex Astrox 88D Pro is widely regarded as one of the best doubles rear-court rackets on the market. Launched in 2022 and refined since, it remains a firm favourite among club and competitive players in New Zealand.

Specifications

  • Weight: 88g (4U)
  • Balance: Head-heavy
  • Flex: Stiff
  • Frame: HM Graphite + Namd + VGSS II
  • Shaft: HM Graphite + Namd
  • NZD Price: ~$399

Performance on Court

The Astrox 88D Pro excels in attacking play from the rear court. Its head-heavy balance and stiff shaft combine to produce a whip-like release through the smash zone, generating impressive shuttle speed with relatively compact swings. During testing across multiple club sessions in Auckland, we found it particularly effective for cross-court attacking clears and punishing mid-court lifts.

Net play is manageable but not the racket's forte — the head-heavy design adds a fraction of a second to reaction time at the net, making the 88S variant the better choice for net-dominant players.

String Compatibility

Strung at factory tension with BG65, we found performance improved significantly when restrung with Yonex BG80 at 27–28 lbs. The graphite frame holds tension well even after extended play.

Pros

  • Exceptional smash power from mid to rear court
  • Solid feel on drives and attacking clears
  • Namd technology delivers a responsive snap at contact
  • Durable construction — holds up well over a season

Cons

  • Head-heavy balance makes net exchanges slightly slower
  • Stiff shaft demands good technique — not ideal for beginners
  • Premium price at NZD $399

Verdict

If you play doubles rear court or are a singles all-court attacker with strong technique, the Yonex Astrox 88D Pro is a top-tier choice. It rewards aggressive play and delivers consistent power that club-level players will immediately notice.
