Victor Gold Feather Shuttle Review — Challenging Yonex's Dominance

Victor Gold Feather Shuttle Review

The Victor Gold feather shuttle has grown in popularity among New Zealand clubs as a quality alternative to Yonex's AS series. Victor claims it matches the AS-50 in flight consistency at a lower price — a bold claim we set out to evaluate.

Specifications

  • Type: Natural feather
  • Feathers: 16 goose feathers
  • Cork: Natural cork base
  • Available speeds: 76, 77, 78
  • NZD Price (per tube of 12): ~$50–$58

Flight Quality Comparison

In side-by-side testing with the Yonex AS-50, the Victor Gold performed admirably. Flight consistency within a tube was excellent, with individual shuttles showing minimal variation in trajectory. The arc and terminal speed were comparable to the AS-50 — experienced players familiar with both brands would struggle to identify a meaningful difference during play.

Feel and Durability

The natural cork base provides good feedback on smashes and clears. Durability was slightly below the AS-50 in our tests — feathers began showing stress damage marginally earlier — but the price difference makes this a reasonable trade-off for most clubs.

Pros

  • Excellent flight consistency comparable to Yonex AS-50
  • More affordable than Yonex at similar quality level
  • Good availability in NZ through Victor retailers
  • Natural cork base for authentic feel

Cons

  • Slightly less durable than Yonex AS-50 in testing
  • Victor's NZ distribution is more limited than Yonex

Verdict

The Victor Gold feather shuttle is a genuine challenger to Yonex's dominance in the NZ market. For clubs looking to maintain quality while reducing shuttle costs, it is absolutely worth trialling as an alternative to the AS-50.
